Artist Project III

My artist for the final presentation is Romuald Hazounme. It is a beninese artist. After the colonisation, settlers stole the majority of african art as masks, statue...etc. Hazounme wants to solve that problem, and reimagine masks with materials of his century.  He makes masks with gas can. His practice reinvent what masks are and the way we can see them. He is a source of inspiration to me. For my architecture 121 class, I decide to design a space for him in the cultural center of Chicago. It is space for exhbition, creation and interaction with people. I hope to send that work to Romuald.

Special Event

"If you want to be an architecte, read books and travel" said one important art director.  I tried  to follow that quote that became a "mantra" to me. During my winter  break,  I read the book "Bart Prince, Pragmatism of Architecture" by Christopher Mead. I learnt a lot about the organic architecture of Prince and his style that touches me a lot. Prince's work reminds me the adobe houses in Benin.  His work is simple, and complicated at the same time. It reflects the fusion between buildings and nature. After reading the book, I decided to push the concept up. I sent an email to Prince, and he accepted to receive me in his residence and studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As the email said, I met the master of organic architecture "April 17th at Monte Vista North East Boulevard after lunch". We talk a lot about architecture, life, Frank lloyd wright and Bruce Goff; his mentor. Prince is very open and fun. ...

MCA Summary

MCA is an important museum in Chicago. It will become more important this summer because of the exhibition of Virgil Abloh of this summer. However, I am really confused sometimes when I get there because they present me very weird thing and call it "art". I know that the idea is important in art today but........ Sometimes I just feel that they don't care there. Just few things touch me in that museum. It pushes me to reflect. What is art ? I really like there library. There are a lot of interesting books about art and design that I hope to have one day if I have the capacity. Art didn't touch me a lot that day so I prefered to visit the library. Thre, it was buch of books about the Bahaus which is the most famous Design School. They create it 100 years ago. That school influenced generations of artist and designer. Mies Van der Rohe who is very famous in Chicago was one the director of that school. I also liked to take portrait of Sophia and Sedo. These pictur...

Public art Visiting

The preparing work helps me to have few information on the subject that I needed to study. I found informations, compare them and tryed to find them on the site. It helps me to understand the subject before. The audio component helps me to know why these things are there and how people interact with them. The most interest thing that I notice is that majority of people who take pictures around these art work don't know the story behind them. I will recommand the tour because with that tour everybody can learn a lot about Chicago who has a link with these art works. I see people who asked me if I liked them. After things that we learnt in Art Appreciation, it was hard to answer that question without a proufound analyze. I learn that it is important to close art piece in museum, but it is also important to make them free sometimes by public art. The street become a museum with life

GLENN LIGON

Glenn Ligon was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1960. Ligon’s paintings and sculptures examine cultural and social identity through found sources—literature, Afrocentric coloring books, photographs—to reveal the ways in which the history of slavery, the civil rights movement, and sexual politics inform our understanding of American society. Ligon appropriates texts from a variety of literary writers including Walt Whitman, Zora Neal Hurston, Gertrude Stein, James Baldwin, and Ralph Ellison, as well from more popular sources such as the comedian Richard Pryor. https://art21.org/watch/extended-play/glenn-ligon-layers-of-meaning-short/

Blog #12

For this work, I selected the Artist Richard Sierra for the Theme Place. The goal of the work of Sierra is to create a new space in the space. It is an interaction with the architecture and people. His work is organic, and different. It question people about what art can be, and how we can live with it in the same space. I want to create an interaction.
